What
do 6th graders do at ODS?
Many, many
things! Students enjoy the outdoors while spending nights in the camp adirondacks,
three sided cabins. That may not sound very good, but it really is! Because
the cabins don't have one side on them, they also don't have musty odors or
mice in them. Even though the ocean and beach are about a hundred feet below
the cabins, kids can hear the ocean lulling them to sleep.
Students meet with their class from their school and their teachers during the mornings of camp as they participate in camp lessons that don't involve homework! During the afternoons, students have a cabin time and recreation time that involve "partner" friends from their own school as well as other students from one or two other schools.Kids at camp eat lots of food! There are three main meals along with an afternoon snack and an evening snack. The food at camp is wonderful! That's what kids say on the evaluations they fill out after camp is over! There are some great evening activities, and every evening the whole camp joins together for Campfire. It's an awesome time of singing and laughing! On one night of camp, cabin groups of students present funny skits.
Sixth graders are really busy almost all the time of camp! To learn more, look through the Student/Parent Handbook, look through the photos of last year's first week and photos of the second week , and read "So You're Coming to Camp!"
Can
home schooled 6th graders attend ODS?
Yes! Every
year we either have students who are homeschooled attend also, or we have individual
students from outside the area whose parent or guardian wants him or her to
attend. If you are interested in attending ODS, contact
Moses and tell him that you are interested! Each student attending camp
pays a fee to attend. This year the cost is $90.00 for the week.
Can
6th grade parents attend ODS?
The one
way for parents to attend ODS is to volunteer to help in the kitchen for one
meal. There is a form that must be filled out and mailed to TCODS prior to camp
as we can only have a small number of parents helping in the kitchen at one
time. Parents need to be in camp ready to begin working 45 minutes before the
meal.
If a student might possibly experience homesickness, it usually isn't a good idea for parents to visit. The visit typically brings on the homesickness for those students.
Keep in mind that no visitors are allowed to roam on their own through camp. We're sure that you can understand that one child's parent appears simply as a stranger to other children, and also we certainly don't want extra people in the cabin areas.
Do
you have information all about ODS that I could print out and read?
Yes! Each
student will receive a Student/Parent ODS
Handbook during the first week of school. You can also read it online here
and even print it out. It will appear as a .pdf file. All you have to do is
click on it to read it and then print it. Also, there is a packet of Precamp
Information about how to fold the United States flag, about th work jobs
students will do at camp to help out, about recreation areas etc. Also be sure
to read through Coming to Camp, a group of web
pages.
