I'm
out of high school. Is there any chance I might be able to become a camp counselor?
First of all, we generally
prefer for counselors to be not more than two years past high school graduation.
As for female counselors, we usually have so many female high school students apply that we can't even take all of the seniors and juniors that want to attend. So . . . we have never had a need for ladies who have graduated from high school to serve as counselors. Sorry!
As for male counselors, except for the last three years, we have often needed more males than are accepted from high school to serve as counselors. If you are interested in serving as a counselor and have not been out of school for more than two years, read the information provided for students interested in becoming counselors. Then, if you think you qualify to be a counselor, email Moses and tell him that you are interested in becoming a counselor even though you are out of high school. Remember, though, that for the last two years of ODS, we have been unable to take any counselors out of high school due to so many high school students applying.
What's
a Senior Counselor (SC)?
A Senior Counselor is a
person who usually has graduated from high school at least one or two full years
ago.
See the Senior Counselor Job Description for a list of responsibilities. The daily schedule is here. SCs serve for one or two weeks of camp. Usually it is a one time job so that others can also have the opportunity to return to camp.
How
can I become a SC?
If you think you can fit
in well with the Senior Counselor Job Description, will be able to truthfully sign the Memorandum of Understanding
for Adults Serving As Senior Counselors if you are selected, understand and agree with
the Outdoor School Rules for Adults, and agree
to be a positive role model to sixth graders and counselors both in and out
of camp to the best of your ability, then email
OOPS! by August 15th. Tell her that you have read the Job Description,
the Memorandum of Understanding, the Rules for Adults, agree to try to be a
positive role model, and that you are very interested in becoming a SC.
Whatare Fantastics, Stewards and STARs, and is there any chance I might be able to become a part of those
staff?
Fantastics, Stewards and STARs members must
be willing to sacrifice almost anything for the good of camp and to provide
an awesome time for all the other people in camp. This person has incredible
initiative, seeing jobs that need to be done and doing them. S/he has an uncommon
willingness to go beyond the call of duty. There is no complaining! This person
can turn any situation, no matter how rainy, no matter how windy, no matter
how dark etc., into a fun experience in order to complete needed tasks and meet
others' needs. Also, these people ares above reproach meaning that s/he
will never be accused of any serious offense because s/he doesn't allow himself
or herself to be placed in a position in which an accusation could even be made.
There are 4 divisions of adult staff, Fantastics, STARs, Stewards and YO!. YO! Staff are adults who have worked with ODS for many years and who assist the director. Click on any of those titles to read their job description.
Does the 2nd paragraph describe you? If you think it does, email Moses to tell him that you believe you would be a great YO! Staff member. Also, make sure that you could truthfully sign the Memorandum of Understanding for Adults Serving As Staff if you are selected, understand and agree with the Outdoor School Rules for Adults, and agree to be a positive role model to sixth graders and counselors both in and out of camp to the best of your ability. Keep in mind that few people are added to YO! Staff. Many counselors assume that they automatically move on to YO! Staff, but it's a very rare occurance.
Are
there any paid positions available?
We do hire a nurse who lives
in camp with us for two weeks, and we employ four cooks who work in camp from
Monday at approximately noon to Friday midafternoon. Other than that, there's
a lot of volunteering going on!
Can
I just volunteer to help out at camp?
Hm . . . parents of a sixth
grader can sign up to work in the kitchen for a meal and then eat with their
child for the meal. However, we need few kitchen volunteers.
We do have a small number of senior citizens who volunteer as Camp Grandparents operating under a strict system of how they can relate to the campers and counselors.
Truthfully, we have little need for more volunteers. Sometimes we find we have to create jobs for people who want to be in camp, and it takes time away from the sixth graders. However, from time to time we do need some help. If you are very interested and could truthfully sign the Memorandum of Understanding for Adults Serving As Staff if you are selected, understand and agree with the Outdoor School Rules for Adults, and agree to be a positive role model to sixth graders and counselors both in and out of camp to the best of your ability, then email Moses and tell him how you are interested in helping. Once again, keep in mind that few volunteers are needed!
