Poetry Inspired by Outdoor School Experiences

A Connection

by Woodstock (Travis Williams)
December 15, 2000

It might seem silly and petty, but
I've discovered that I compare
All my experiences and relationships
To the ones that happened there.

Nothing ever really matches
Or could rival the beauty that I know
That I found on the beach and in a cabin
That helped me grow.

It helped me grow beyond words
In countless ways and directions
Inevitable changing who I am
And I thank you all for my connection.

My connection to people . . .
I'm connected to the land and beasts . . .
Can you feel the same way I do
When your mind is released?

Release your mind by trust . . .
By showing who you are.
Look at those you've never met,
And wonder who they are.

Don't wonder about their past
Or their faith or their education.
Ask them silently if they've ever been
In your situation.

If you were to go and talk to them . . .
As simply as asking what they thought
On a subject as simple as the weather . . .
Would they respond or not . . .?

Would they look at you strangely
Like you had twelve eyes?
Or would they smile and welcome you to sit
And talk about the skies?

"Will it rain?" they say
To begin a conversation.
In an instant you've made a friend.
And you've made a connection.

A connection.

I can find it in you now,
I know where it hides.
I've uncovered the secrets
I found them outside.

I discovered this magic
With help from some of you
In a magical mystical Utopia
Outdoor School.

Were you there?
Did you feel the deeper lesson?
Maybe not everybody can
But it's there somewhere inside you, deep underneath . . .
A connection.
